How to Make Custom DIY Magnetic Tins

Hey there lovers of Tatertots and Jello (the blog not the food…well, sure why not, the food too). Forgive me, I’m a bit silly sometimes… My name is Ursula, and I blog at Home Made by Carmona. I’m falling all over myself with excitement to be here on TT&J today! I’m a homeschooling mom to 3 adorable girly girls, a lover of all things organized (although my house didn’t seem to get that memo), and I’m a bit of a DIY junkie (well you have to be when your decor budget is pretty much pocketbook fumes).
Today I’ll be showing you how to make custom DIY magnetic tins. Why you ask? Because I say organization should be as beautiful as it is functional, and lets face it…the really beautiful magnetic tins (the ones I drool over on Pinterest) are waaaaaaaaay outside of my price range. So, for those of you whose budget consists of $1/tin, this is for you. Hmmm, it’s also for those of you who simply couldn’t find anything you really loved, or find that perfect hue to match your office…

The best part of creating custom magnetic tins is being able to have tins in your favorite colors! I match each set of storage tins to the colors of the room I’ve decorated. Here’s What You’ll Need

• Party favor tins: I found mine on sale at a party store at $5 for a 10 pk.
• OR Unpainted metal tins: Found at any craft store, usually under $1/ea.
• OR Small plastic containers: Found at the dollar or craft stores for 50 cents to $1/ea.
• High gloss spray paint: In your favorite colors, plus Clear spray paint for sealing.
• Magnetic adhesive sheets: Look for 8.5 x 11″ sheets, 60mm thick. $9-$15 for a 5-10pk.

Spray Paint

Start by removing any clear plastic window inserts (if applicable). Spray paint your tins with the lid still on…this ensures the inside lip isn’t painted so it will continue to open and close easily. Before each painting session clear your spray can’s nozzle by spraying away from your tins first. Spray in short bursts keeping a little distance so the coverage is thin and the paint doesn’t pool. Allow it to dry completely between coats, and finish with a clear protective coat of paint.

Trace & Cut Magnetic Sheets

You can find 8.5″ x 11″ 60mm magnetic sheets at craft & fabric stores, or (a much easier option) online. I purchased my 5 pack on Amazon for $9 free shipping.

Make sure the area of circle you are cutting is smaller than the area of the tin’s base. You want to be able to recess the magnet so it isn’t visible. Then simply peel the backing and adhere to your tin.

If you are using the party favor tins with a clear window, then pop the clear plastic window back in place, and you’re ready to store all your little knick knacks!

Whatever your colors of choice, whatever your room’s decor, you’ll love having storage to match! Oh, and a little trick for the rooms without a magnetic board…cut extra circles to adhere to the surface you want to store your tins. Neat huh?

Who Say’s It Has To Be Metal Tins? The best part of creating your own custom magnetic tins is being able to think outside the box! Don’t limit yourself to metal tins…use plastic containers, wooden or cardboard boxes of every shape! And yes, that is my refrigerator.

Bring On The Wow Factor! Be creative with your designs! I love using rub-on transfers, creating spray painted designs, washi tape, and more! You are only limited by your imagination.
